What is a Union?

Many of you have probably heard about unions but may not fully understand what a union actually is or
how they function. Well, a union is a group of workers who choose to exercise their federally protected
right, under the National Labor Relations Act, to negotiate collectively with their employer for the best
possible wages, benefits and working conditions all guaranteed by a legally binding contract.  A union is a
non-profit, democratic organization run by the members on both the local and national level.  Typically,
each local union has one or more officers elected by the membership, from the membership, to take care
of the day-to-day business of the local.  Members come together for a monthly meeting to learn about,
discuss, and form solutions to issues in their workplace.  Members can also volunteer to become a
steward while maintaining their role as an employee of the company.  The Union Steward is a vital link
between the union leadership, employees, and management, and is there to ensure members are
represented immediately when the need arises.

What About Dues?

Just like the Chamber of Commerce, your place of worship, or any other membership organization,
financial support is a fact of life.  Dues are used to run your union and keep it strong.  Members of each
Local Union set their own monthly dues.  In the IBEW, the dues are divided between your Local Office and
the International Office. The International Office is headquartered in Washington D.C. and makes sure its
members’ voices are heard on Capitol Hill.  It also provides expert services to your local union, including
negotiators, lawyers, economists, and educators.  The Local Union's money is used for negotiations, for
the union hall, funding of community projects, and for other necessary expenses of your union.

Are My Dues Protected?

All funds are under the sole control of the membership.  Strict accounting of funds is required by federal
and state law and expenditures are subject to the approval of the members.  A full financial report is made
at each monthly meeting and certified audits are made quarterly.  It’s important to note that nobody will
pay a nickel in dues until you have negotiated, voted for, and signed a beneficial new contract with
management.
